OBJE:_DSCR	Physical Attributes James is a plain man, neither handsome nor ugly, of average height. He is always well-put-together, however, and takes care with his appearance. Background James is the son of Charles Cecil, Viscount Cranborne, the eldest surviving son of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury, and his first wife, Lady Diana Maxwell. When he was five, his parents divorced, his father marrying his aunt, Lady Jane Maxwel l shortly thereafter. He thus has one full-blooded sister, Catherine and two half-sisters: Frances Cecil and Julia FitzRichard, the latter being his mother's illegitimate youngest child. Educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, James was a page of honor at the coronation of Charles II and served as a volunteer aboard the Royal Charles in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. In 1665 he married Lady Margaret Manners, daughter of John Manner s, 8th Earl of Rutland and has four children. In 1668 he became Capital Steward of Hertford, and in the same year won a seat as knight of the shire for Hertfordshire in a by-election, spending £1200 and attracting the support of local Quakers. Hi s father having died in 1660, he was styled "Viscount Cranborne" by courtesy, until he succeeded his grandfather to the earldom in December, 1668, whereupon he moved from the lower house of Parliament to the upper. He is one of Shaftesbury's most v ocal allies, and in February, 1674, moved a bill for the protestant education of the Duke of York's children.
